Programme Overview

The Certificate in General Learning and Personal Development (CGLPD) at Mary Immaculate College is a two-year programme for people with intellectual disabilities delivered in an inclusive third level setting. This course is devoted to the academic learning, personal growth and career development prospects of the student. The full development of each student’s potential, dignity and self-worth is embraced.

Programme Content

The central objective of the Certificate in General Learning and Personal Development, is to provide a pathway to third level education which empowers adults with an intellectual disability to achieve their educational and employment goals. Linked to the NFQ, this accredited Level 4 certificate programme, offers a progression route to further education and training options. The initiative aims to build capacity among learners and enable them to develop the skills required to become independent citizens.

Over the course of the programme students have the opportunity to undertake the following modules:

  • Interpersonal Communications Skills
  • Social Studies
  • Creative Art Appreciation
  • Mathematics & Financial Management [ 1 & 2]
  • Information Communication Technology
  • Career Development
  • Research & Study Skills Development
  • Work Placement

Entry Requirements

Prospective entrants must:

  • Be 18 years of age on enrolment
  • Have been identified as having an intellectual disability from birth or early years
  • Have a commitment to ongoing learning and personal development
  • Have three or more Level 3 FETAC Minor Awards (including Literacy/ Communication and, preferably, Numeracy), or equivalent
